TSMC estimates that next year there will be nearly 300 million units of shipments of 5G smartphones globally.
Now there are leaked reports from internal TSMC related to global shipments of 5G smartphones. Reporting from GSM Arena (16/10), they estimate global 5G smartphone shipments will be able to approach 300 million units next year. This is a much higher estimate than most market observers expected.
TSMC is operating at full capacity on a 7nm 5G modem and premium chipset. Some memory device vendors have even asked their controller suppliers to build inventory in advance to avoid production bottlenecks at TSMC.
Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics estimates that 5G smartphones will only generate 1 percent of total sales this year. Whereas next year the amount will be 10 times greater. It is estimated that five years from now almost half of smartphones sold will have 5G connectivity.
It was stated that the reason most consumers have not yet switched to 5G smartphones, because prices tend to be expensive is still the biggest concern of consumers. Consumers do not want to spend a lot of money to buy a device that is possibly bad with a network that is not widely available. So it seems that operators must expand 5G's network coverage to make 5G smartphones more attractive to consumers.
Currently, Samsung is the leader of the 5G smartphone market due to strong sales in South Korea. However, Huawei is expected to ship 80 million 5G smartphones in China next year.
