At the opening of this year, Huawei launched the HarmonyOS operating system which is touted as a replacement for Android. But it is different with Android, the operating system is not limited to smartphones, but for other devices such as smart home products.
Now a new report claims the HarmonyOS market share will reach 2% globally next year. If this claim is accurate, then HarmonyOS will become the fifth largest operating system in the world, or surpass Linux.
The Conterpoint report shows that HongMeng's operating system market share in China reached 0.1% at the end of this year and will reach 5% by the end of next year. Android is currently the largest operating system in the world with a market share of 39%, followed by Windows (35%), iOS (13.87%), and macOS (0.77%) as the fifth largest operating system.
Reported by Gizmochina (10/14), HarmonyOS can support various applications including Android, Linux, and HTML5 in the future. This new Huawei operating system uses the Huawei ARK compiler and will support the programming languages Kotlin, Java, Javascript, C and C ++. This operating system will also have a verified Trusted Execution Environment for better security on some devices.
Huawei says it has started the development of this new operating system since 2017. Currently, HarmonyOS is present in version 1.0. The next version is scheduled to launch next year and version 3.0 in 2021. We also might see this operating system available on a PC next year, and on a VR headset in 2022.
Previously HarmonyOS was available on smart tv. Honor Vision TV and Huawei smart TV are the two devices currently powered by HarmonyOS. However the company says it has no plans to adopt HarmonyOS to smartphones this year.
Not long ago, Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei said in an interview that the operating system he developed at the company would be able to compete with the biggest competitors such as Apple iOS in only two years.
